At least two people were killed in a devastating pileup inside a tunnel on Interstate 80 in Wyoming, which also shut down a portion of the critical east-west highway, authorities confirmed Friday.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation reported that the “multi-vehicle crash” took place on the westbound side of I-80 at 11:37 a.m. local time. Images shared by the Wyoming Highway Patrol showed thick black smoke billowing from the tunnel entrance.

The Highway Patrol stated that the two confirmed fatalities were found outside the tunnel. The agency also confirmed that a fire was burning at the scene, with vehicle tires reportedly “exploding” due to the intense heat.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon stated he is closely monitoring the situation and has deployed state resources to assist with local recovery efforts.
“I am praying for everyone involved and their families,” Gordon said. “I have directed the relevant agencies to work alongside local communities to offer aid to the injured, support those who have lost loved ones, and assist in addressing ongoing concerns.”
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) confirmed that the 1,100-foot tunnel was evacuated, and the crash site has been secured. A portion of I-80, which stretches from California to New Jersey, remains closed until further notice. WYDOT geologists and bridge engineers are en route to evaluate the tunnel.
“My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic crash,” said WYDOT Director Darin Westby. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. WYDOT and the Wyoming Highway Patrol are on site, helping local responders and providing additional support and traffic control.”
Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County reported that it was treating victims of the “mass casualty incident” and asked the public to avoid visiting the hospital unless they were immediate family members or had an emergency. By late afternoon, the hospital announced it had resumed normal operations.
“We appreciate the support and understanding of our community during this difficult time,” Memorial Hospital said in a social media post. “We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
