Renowned Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio has passed away at the age of 77.
The award-winning artist, celebrated for her iconic Mexican ranchera music, died from a heart attack early on Monday, as confirmed by her record label, Discos Musart, to Good Morning America.
A statement on her social media, translated from Spanish, read: “With profound sorrow and sadness, we confirm the heartbreaking passing of our beloved ‘Paquita la del Barrio’ at her home in Veracruz. She was a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable artist who will leave an unforgettable legacy in the hearts of all who knew her and cherished her music.”

According to an M&M Group Entertainment biography, Paquita la del Barrio, whose real name was Francisca Viveros Barradas, often used her songs to challenge Mexico’s sexist male culture. The biography also notes that she was listed as exclusive talent by the company.

Paquita la del Barrio is best known for her iconic hit “Rata de dos patas,” where she uses the metaphor of a rat to describe a cheating man. She is also celebrated for albums like Puro Dolor, Eres Un Farsante, and Romeo Y Su Nieta.
